First identified by the German anatomist Friedrich B. Reinke in 1895, the Reinke's space is a gelatinous layer of the vocal cord located underneath the outer cells of the vocal cord. When a person speaks, the Reinke's space vibrates to allow for sound to be produced. The Reinke's space is sometimes referred to as the superficial lamina propria.

Transependymal edema, also known as interstitial cerebral edema or periventricular lucency (PVL), is a type of cerebral edema that occurs with increased pressure within the cerebral ventricles. FLAIR is the most sensitive MRI sequence for detection. Interstitial lung edema arises almost exclusively due to an increase of the pulmonary capillary hydrostatic pressure (P cap), which occurs most commonly in left sided heart failure, hence it is a key element of cardiogenic lung edema.

Abstract. An analysis of 92 eases of Reinke’s oedema was done in this study. It wen most often seen in middle-aged persons. A Male predilection (57%) was found. In 68 (74%) cases, the lesions were unilateral and in 24 (26%) teses, the lesions were bilateral. Smoking (83%), vocal alms or misuse (80%) and chromnic respiratory tract infection (43%) Reinke edema (RE) is an uncommon lesion of the vocal folds and a potential cause of complications during airway management.
The condition occurs in the setting of rapid expansion of a collapsed lung, with acute onset shortness of breath usually occurring within hours of re-expansion. The onset of pulmonary edema can be delayed by up to 24 hours in some cases.
